Tratzberg Castle in the Jenbach Waldviertel was first mentioned in documents in the 13th century and served as a border fortress against Bavaria. After a fire in 1492, the original fortified castle was completely destroyed and Emperor Maximilian exchanged the ruins for a castle belonging to the rich silver mine owners Tänzel. In 1500, they built the first late Gothic section of today's Tratzberg Castle and had it decorated with ornate marble, wood and ironwork. Over the centuries, Tratzberg went through several changes of ownership and served, among other things, as a hunting lodge and residence for wealthy merchant families such as the Fuggers.
After almost 150 years of vacancy, the castle was acquired in the 19th century by the Goëss-Enzenberg family, who still live there today and have restored it to become one of the most important art and cultural monuments in the country. Today Tratzberg, which with its 5000 sqm shingle roof is one of the largest Tyrolean castles of the 16th century, can be visited.
