A marvel left by Celts and Romans
Seggau Castle in Styria is an imposing complex perched on a wooded hill above the town of Leibnitz. The area surrounding the castle is rich in history, dating back to the time of the Celts and Romans. The area was once owned by the Archbishopric of Salzburg and the upper castle was built in the 12th century as a missionary and administrative bastion. Over time, three independent castles developed side by side: Leibnitz Castle, the castle of the Bishops of Seckau and Polheim Castle.
After the Second World War, the castle had become unprofitable as a purely agricultural estate and was finally converted into a modern congress, conference and seminar centre, a hotel, a wine cellar and a swing for the region. Today, Seggau Castle is a popular venue for events and offers a unique insight into the history of the region.
